Ask a tabloid why marriages end and you will hear about affairs. Ask researchers and divorced people themselves and the answers are quieter, slower, and more preventable than the headline version.
What divorced people actually report
Studies that survey people after divorce, including well-known work in the Journal of Divorce and Remarriage and long-running research programs on marriage, find a consistent top tier of named causes:
- Lack of commitment, the most commonly named cause in several surveys.
- Growing apart, the slow drift into separate lives under one roof.
- Constant arguing and poor conflict habits that never get repaired.
- Infidelity, which frequently follows the first three rather than starting them.
- Financial conflict, from incompatible money values to chronic scarcity stress.
- Marrying too young, which compresses all the other risks.
- Substance abuse and, in the most serious cases, abuse of a partner.
The pattern underneath
The list looks like seven causes, but researchers tend to see two. The first is erosion: commitment, attention, and friendship wearing away until the marriage is a logistics arrangement. The second is escalation: conflict, contempt, or genuinely destructive behavior making the home unsafe or unlivable. Affairs and blowups get the blame, but they are usually late chapters, not the opening scene.
Which ones are preventable
Erosion responds to effort surprisingly well, which is why counseling helps many couples who seek it early. Escalation is harder, and where safety is involved, leaving is the right call, not a failure. If you recognize your marriage in the second category, or the erosion is complete and only one of you is still trying, our guide on when a sexless or roommate marriage is truly over and our eligibility check can help you see the road ahead clearly.
