Divorce costs live on a strange curve. The same legal result can cost a few hundred dollars or fifty thousand, and the difference is rarely the complexity of the property. It is the fighting. Keeping a divorce cheap is mostly the art of keeping it agreed.
Step 1: Protect the agreement
Every dollar in a divorce budget is downstream of one question: do you and your spouse agree on the terms? An uncontested divorce skips attorney retainers, discovery, and hearings, which is where the real money goes. Before anything else, work toward agreement on property, debts, and any parenting arrangements, even if the conversations are uncomfortable. Each issue you settle at the kitchen table is worth hundreds to thousands of dollars.
Step 2: Choose the low-cost preparation route
- Pure DIY: download your state's official forms and complete them yourselves; the cost is your time and the risk of rejected paperwork.
- Online divorce service: guided preparation of the correct forms for a few hundred dollars, the middle path most agreeing couples want.
- Limited-scope lawyer: pay an attorney for an hour or two of review rather than full representation, useful when one issue needs professional eyes.
Step 3: Attack the court costs
The filing fee, roughly $100 to $450 depending on the state, is unavoidable unless you qualify for a fee waiver, in which case it can drop to zero. Use a waiver of service instead of paying a process server, and skip extra certified copies you do not need.
Where not to cut
Cheap is not the same as careless. If there is a pension to divide, a business, or any coercion in the relationship, spending on professional help is the cheaper choice over a decade. And never trade a fair settlement for a fast one; the discount is an illusion.
